Move a piano overseas with Elliott International

Moving a grand piano is no ordinary task—it is a delicate operation that requires precision, planning, and a deep respect for the instrument’s craftsmanship. As General Manager for Private Relocation, I have encountered many challenging moves, but one particular relocation from a 12th-floor apartment in Cape Town stands out.

The Challenge: A Grand Piano on the 12th Floor

The apartment’s elevator was too narrow to accommodate the length of the grand piano, especially after we had constructed a custom solid plywood crate for its protection. Our team had to dismantle the piano, carefully remove the legs, pedals, and strapwork and secure the lid. Each component was wrapped in grease-free paper, aerothene cushioning, and a layer of cardboard for added protection.

Custom Crating and Crane Operation

We assembled the custom-made crate inside the apartment using measurements taken during our pre-move survey. With the piano securely crated, we employed a crane to hoist it down to ground level, where another team awaited to receive it. The piano was then placed on a dolly and loaded directly into a shipping container bound for the USA.

Successful International Delivery and Customer Satisfaction

Upon arrival in the United States, our international partners uncrated, unwrapped, and expertly reassembled the piano in our customer’s new residence. She sent us photos of the grand piano safely set up in her lounge, not a scratch on it, a testament to the careful planning and execution of our team.
