Relocating across borders can be a complex endeavour, but with the right partner, it becomes a seamless experience. Elliott International recently facilitated a significant move from Franschhoek, South Africa, to Blantyre, Malawi, ensuring every detail was carefully planned.
A Journey Across Borders
Our client, having accepted a position with a major brewing company in Malawi, entrusted Elliott International with the relocation of his household belongings. The move spanned over 3,000 kilometres, traversing South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and finally into Malawi, involving six border crossings.
To initiate the process, a comprehensive pre-move survey was conducted at the client’s residence in Franschhoek. This assessment determined the volume and specific packing requirements necessary for the journey ahead. Given the varying road conditions and the extended distance, special precautions were taken:
- Furniture was protected with reinforced cardboard.
- Fragile items were carefully packed into double-corrugated cartons, cushioned with protective white and tissue paper.
- Additional padding was placed at the top and bottom of each carton to absorb potential shocks during transit.
Navigating the Complexities of Cross-Border Moves
Crossing multiple international borders necessitates thorough documentation and planning. Elliott International ensured all requisite documents were in order, including:
- Certified copies of the client’s passport.
- Work permit and letter of employment.
- SAD 500 form and TPin number.
One notable segment of the journey was the Kazungula ferry crossing, which connects Botswana to Zambia. This ferry, operated by two motorized pontoons, is a critical link in the region’s transport network.
Timely Delivery
Despite challenges such as traffic delays and varying road conditions, the entire relocation was completed in three weeks; two days ahead of the estimated schedule. Upon arrival in Blantyre, our team provided a full unpacking service, carefully placing all belongings in the client’s new residence and removing all packing materials.
The client was particularly impressed that not a single item was damaged during the move, a testament to the care and precision employed by Elliott International throughout the process.
Why Malawi Appeals to South Africans
Malawi, often referred to as the “Warm Heart of Africa,” has become an increasingly attractive destination for South Africans seeking new opportunities and experiences. Several factors contribute to this appeal:
Affordable Living: The cost of living in Malawi is relatively low, with affordable housing options and daily expenses.
- Natural Beauty: Home to Lake Malawi and numerous national parks, the country offers breathtaking landscapes and outdoor activities.
- Friendly Communities: Malawians are known for their warmth and hospitality, making it easier for newcomers to integrate and feel at home.
- Growing Opportunities: Sectors such as agriculture, brewing, and tourism are expanding, presenting various professional prospects.
While there are challenges, such as occasional power outages and limited access to certain goods, many South Africans find that the benefits of living in Malawi outweigh these drawbacks. The country’s serene environment and welcoming culture provide a unique and enriching experience for expatriates.
