The United Arab Emirates has long been a popular destination for expats, mainly due to the Emirates’ (Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain) thriving business sector and modern lifestyle. The earning potential has also proven a big draw for South Africans looking to emigrate.
In fact, it’s common for South Africans to spend several years working in the UAE building up financial reserves that enable them, upon returning to South Africa, to kickstart a new phase in life, such as buying a home in cash or starting a family—something that wouldn’t be possible if they were only earning in Rands.
Below, we delve into what it takes to make your move to the UAE seamless and successful, starting with understanding your visa requirements.
South African Visa Requirements for the United Arab Emirates
If you don’t have a UAE passport, you’ll need at least a visa to work and live in the United Arab Emirates, which means you’ll need a job and an employer willing to help you with the process.
Employment Residence Visas are managed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), and employers must apply for a work permit on behalf of their employees to be considered and approved.
Once a work permit has been approved, you are issued an entry permit that allows you to enter the UAE on the grounds of employment. This permit is valid for 30 days, which can be extended once to 60 days during which time your employer is required to arrange an Employment Residence Visa.
It’s important to note that the UAE Employment Residence Visa procedure starts only after you enter the United Arab Emirates.
Once your employer’s application for the Employment Residence Visa is approved, the GDRFA will attach an Employment Residence Visa (Residence Visa for employment purposes) to your passport, and you will receive an Emirates ID, valid for the same duration as your visa. You will also receive a Labour Card, which informs the authorities that you have permission to work in the UAE.
If you are self-employed or a skilled employee you can apply for a Green Visa which is a type of residence visa that allows the holder to sponsor him or herself for 5 years, eliminating the need for a UAE national or employer to sponsor his or her visa.
Alternatively, if you have a family member or close relative who is already a UAE resident, they can apply for a UAE Family Visa on your behalf at any of the UAE ticketing offices.
Please note that it is always advised to seek guidance from the appropriate authorities or a respected visa service provider, as requirements may change based on individual circumstances and the visa category that you are applying for.
Arrival in the United Arab Emirates
Upon arriving in the UAE, you can expect your visa or entry permit to be checked by immigration officials.
This process is an efficient one, provided you carry all required documents, including a valid passport with sufficient validity, entry permit or visa, and any supporting paperwork. UAE immigration is stringent about compliance, so ensure that you meet all entry requirements and have the necessary documentation to facilitate a smooth entry process.
